Lorna Mackay

Store Manager at Fishkeeper Ayr
How long have you been keeping fish?

I have been in Fishkeeping for 20 plus years.

What was your first aquarium and what fish did you keep in it?

My first aquarium was a Fluval Roma 125L community aquarium.

What was it that made you decide to turn your fishkeeping hobby into a career?

I love working with such a diverse range of fish, and who wouldn’t want their hobby to be their career

Which species do you most enjoy keeping and why?

I love all the tetras. There are such a huge variety and they are a great community fish.

Which species haven’t you had a chance to keep yet but dream of having one day?

I would love to keep an octopus one day. I just need to find an escape proof tank.

What pearl of wisdom would you give to first time fish keepers?

Always take things slowly and don’t overstock your tank.

What’s your favourite aspect of your work at Maidenhead Aquatics?

We have lovely regular customers who we have got to know as friends and also the exciting ranges of fish that we get into the store. I also have an amazing team here at Fishkeeper Ayr

What’s your favourite/most useful piece of fishkeeping equipment and why?

A CO2 kit for your planted tank. The plants do so much better in an aquarium using CO2.

What do you think is the future of fishkeeping and what developments would you most like to see?

I would like to see more marine fish being tank bred and more girls taking up the hobby!

How many aquariums do you currently keep at home, and what are these?

I currently keep a 240Ltr Aquascaped aquarium and my son has a 34Ltr in his room.

What’s the most unique species you’ve ever cared for at Maidenhead Aquatics?

A stunning blue ribbon eel.
