Amy Kousourou

Sales assistant at Fishkeeper Aberdeen

What was your first aquarium and what fish did you keep in it?

I had a hexagonal tank with two platies, a sunset called Stanley and a salt and pepper called Stella

Which species haven’t you had a chance to keep yet but dream of having one day?

I would love to keep an eel! Really though, there are so many fish I would love to own, I wouldn’t be able to fit them on the one page!

What would be your dream aquarium?

A huge marine, full of beautiful coral and exotic fish.

What’s your favourite aspect of your work at Maidenhead Aquatics?

Getting to see and learn about fish that I would otherwise never get to observe

What’s your favourite/most useful piece of fishkeeping equipment and why?

I bought a bubble magus skimmer for my marine tank and it’s been wonderful. Reef-roids have also made my corals grow and look great!

What’s your top tip for customers taking their first plunge into marine fishkeeping?

Marine requires patience. Don’t rush anything, the time that you’ve waited will be worth it.

What’s the best customer you ever had and why?

I don't have anyone specific, but customers who are willing to listen and learn are always the best to work with.

What’s the most rewarding experience you’ve had at Maidenhead Aquatics?

The look on people’s faces when they’ve got a beautiful tank and happy fish because of the advice I gave them.

Which wild species do you find the most bizarre, interesting or impressive?

Vampire squid! Really anything lurking in the depths of our oceans has to win the bizarre category

What do you think is the future of fishkeeping and what developments would you most like to see?

I think more of an understanding from the public that fish are not disposable and deserve the same care for their wellbeing as any other creature.

What’s your secret fishkeeping “top tip”?

The bigger the tank, the easier it is to maintain, especially for marine!
