Certain species of bacteria such as Aeromonas and Pseudomonas cause fin, mouth and body tissue to be eaten away. A bacterial infection may cause tail, fin and mouth rot in susceptible fish — those who are bullied or injured by fin-nipping tank mates — especially in aquariums with poor conditions. Open wounds are also susceptible to fungal attack (Saprolegnia sp.) which can result in cotton wool-like infestations. Early diagnosis of these problems is essential to prevent the infection from becoming fatal.
