Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite are all components of the nitrogen cycle, a natural process that is fundamental in an aquarium. However at high levels in freshwater or marine aquariums any of these can be lethal for fish, so keeping these at a balanced level is highly important. High levels of nitrate is also a common cause of algae blooms.
