Fish Feeding Guides

Feeding your aquarium fish the correct types and quantities of fish food is essential for maintaining good long-term health. There is a vast range of different nourishment available for your fish, from the familiar flake foods to pellets, granules, tablets, wafers, and sticks, along with frozen, freeze-dried, gel-based, and live offerings. Some will even enjoy selected vegetables.

Take a look through these guides where we detail what to feed and the amounts to feed/feeding frequency:

Tropical Guide
It is important to bear in mind that the food which enters the aquarium is the primary source of organic waste produced by the fish - and subsequent toxic pollutants such as ammonia and nitrite. If the quantity of food increases, so does the level of resulting toxic pollutants.
Flake Food Guide
Flakes are undoubtedly the most popular food for feeding tropical fish and are ideal for providing convenient staple nutrition to small-medium-sized community fish such as livebearers and tetras.
Frozen Food Guide
There are a huge variety of frozen foods available, many of which are high in protein and make an excellent dietary supplement. These foods closely replicate the natural diet of your fish and are ideal for finicky feeders, those that are tricky to get feeding in the first instance, and for bringing your fish into breeding condition.
Live Food Guide
Live foods are not as popular as they once were. For many, this is perhaps a decision based on ethics, coupled with the progressive availability of a whole host of nutritionally superior dried and frozen foods (which pose no disease introduction risk).
Herbivores and Algae-eater Guide
There are a number of vegetables (and some fruits) that can be offered to herbivorous and omnivorous fish, but do wash thoroughly before adding to the aquarium.
Winter Feeding and Pond Fish Guide
Pond fish are poikilothermic (cold-blooded) creatures. This means that their body temperature is controlled by their immediate surroundings, and their behaviour corresponds directly to how warm or cold they are.
