Hikari Silkworm Selects is made from by products of silk production. Silkworms eat large amounts of leaves and store energy so that the emerged adults can lay healthy eggs. During silk production, the cocoon is boiled to obtain the silk, this unfortunately leads to the death of the pupae inside. The pupa contains loads of vital nutrition which would otherwise go to waste. In Japan, where silk production has been a key industry for centuries, the unwanted pupae would be thrown to the fish rather than left to waste. Unlock the secret of Japanese Koi farming with this Hikari food.

The nutritional value of silkworm pupae differs depending on place of origin and season, but it tends to contain high amounts of lipids and protein. Dried silkworm is 23-26 % lipid and 55-59 % protein. Care should be taken not to use oxidized, poor quality silk worm as this can result in Sekoke disease.

Koi are omnivorous fish, and will naturally feed on insects and small crustaceans, if your pond is too clean for these invertebrates to gather, then this important food source is lost and their diet is missing a key component. Dried silkworm is known as a one of the best diet supplements and is an excellent way of offering an invertebrate food source.

To this day, many koi breeders in Japan are using dried silkworm as a supplement to encourage better growth, particularly in the summer when water temperatures are high. It is of course effective for koi keepers as well but it was not easy to find or store, until now!

The lipids in Silkworm Pupa oxidize easily when stored without proper treatment. Thanks to the high-tech extruding process with added natural anti-oxidants, Silkworm Select can’t be oxidized for several months. That being said it is still not recommended to offer this food past its sell-by date.
