Many aquatic plants in tropical regions have two very distinct and unique type of leaf forms. When water levels are low and the plant is exposed, growth is rigid enabling plants to stand upright and grow above the surface of the water. When the rainy season arrives and the plants are returned to being submerged below the water once again, these leaves are shed and softer growth develops that is adapted to submerse conditions.
