Among a few groups of freshwater and marine fish, the dominant male guards a harem of smaller females and chases away any rival males that may enter his breeding territory. To get around this situation, 'sneaker males' have evolved. These individuals are the size, shape and colour of the females and mate with the harem without being detected! A good example of this 'sneaky' behaviour is commonplace within the South American dwarf cichlids genus Apistogramma (e.g. Apistogramma agassizii, Apistogramma macmasteri).
