What was it that got you hooked on fishkeeping?

Researching exotic fish in depth and then bringing them home and getting to experience their behaviour myself.

What was it that made you decide to turn your fishkeeping hobby into a career?

Being able to put to use all the weird fish facts I have accumulated over the years.

Which species do you most enjoy keeping and why?

Ocellaris Clownfish.

Which species was the trickiest or challenging for you to keep and why?

Otocinclus, great at their job but slightly finicky.

Which species haven’t you had a chance to keep yet but dream of having one day?

An Oscar, never quite had the room!

What would be your dream aquarium?

A systemised AquaOak cube, I love sumps.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned since joining Maidenhead Aquatics?

The prevalence of Dwarf Gourami Idirovirus.

What’s your favourite aspect of your work at Maidenhead Aquatics?

Fish delivery day!

What question do customers ask you most often?

Do fish only grow to the size of the tank they are in.

What’s your favourite/most useful piece of fishkeeping equipment and why?

Sponge filter, underused in small aquariums.

What’s your top tip for customers taking their first plunge into marine fishkeeping?

The more flow the better! Wavemakers are a godsend.

Which aquatic habitat, like the Amazon or the Red Sea, would you most like to visit?

Lake Malawi.

What’s the best customer you ever had and why?

Helping a local school to set up a fish tank for our Fishkeeper Fry program.

What’s the most rewarding experience you’ve had at Maidenhead Aquatics?

Having customers return to the shop and asking for me for advice by name.

What species would you recommend for a child’s first aquarium?

One single male Betta, hardy and lots of character.

What’s the most unique species you’ve ever cared for at Maidenhead Aquatics?

Spotted Climb Perch

Describe the trickiest fishkeeping problem you were ever able to solve for a customer

Explaining how ammonia locking products create false positive ammonia tests to a concerned customer.

Which of the fish in your store has the most character?

Synodontis Nigriventris, swimming upside down is adorable.

Which wild species do you find the most bizarre, interesting or impressive?

The Giant Squid! The fact that they were only filmed in the wild for the first time somewhat recently blows my mind.

What’s your secret fishkeeping “top tip”?

Clean your impellers!

What do you think is the future of fishkeeping and what developments would you most like to see?

More app controlled aquarium features, including submersible cameras so we can see how our fish act when we aren’t around.
