Sam Kent
How long have you been a Maidenhead Aquatics team member?
25+ Years
How long have you been keeping fish?
40+ Years
What motivated you to become a partner of the business?
To drive a young business forward and develop new locations around the country
What was your first aquarium and what fish did you keep in it?
Marine reef aquarium with soft corals and clownfish
What species do you most enjoy keeping and why?
Small rainbows and less common community species in a planted aquarium. I enjoy having to search in to a heavily planted aquarium an not knowing who or what might come out of the plants.
What pearl of wisdom would you give to first-time Fishkeepers?
Feed little and often and never over clean biological filter media and never in tap water.
What would be your dream aquarium?
300 litre planted aquarium Dutch style with Co2.
What’s your favourite aspect of work at Maidenhead Aquatics?
Customer service, I love the new challenges that each customer can bring and helping them to resolve issues. I also enjoy the variety of my particular role.
What’s your secret fishkeeping “top tip”?
Microbelift special blend, since using this product, my aquarium has never been better.
How many aquariums do you currently keep at home, and what are these?
3 aquariums and a pond, 1 large fancy goldfish aquarium (Oase 300) 2 Biorb cubes with pygmy pufferfish (though these are my daughters’ aquariums) and a small nature pond.
What do you think is the future of fishkeeping and what developments would you most like to see?
I think having seen the growth of online business over the past years, I see the rediscovery of the instore shopping experience and a more integrated approach. Customers are seemingly becoming disillusioned with online experience and are actively seeking out “real” experiences and interactions.
What’s the most unique species you’ve ever cared for at Maidenhead Aquatics?
The unusual is quite usual at maidenhead aquatics so I can’t really name one.
What is it that first got you hooked on fishkeeping?
The tranquillity of a beautiful and well-maintained planted aquarium.
14. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned since joining Maidenhead Aquatics?
Even after so many years, I’m still learning different things every day and that is the most interesting thing for me.
