Description
Care
The Red Stripe Angelfish usually adapts well to aquarium life if given plenty of hiding places amongst live rock, which, in a mature tank, will also provide foraging opportunities. We must advise caution when planning on adding this fish into a reef setting. If this is attempted by advanced aquarists, certain invertebrates must be avoided (see above) and do ensure that the tank is of large proportions - this way the fish is less likely to continually pick at any particular sessile invertebrate and cause irreparable damage. The Red Stripe Angelfish is an active fish and grows a little larger than some of the other dwarf angelfish species, therefore requiring plenty of space. Cramped quarters will also heighten the aggression level of the Red Stripe Angelfish towards small peaceful species. Keep only one specimen per tank, and not with any other Centropyge species. Should be the last addition to the tank. There is an interesting species of Tang known as the Red Stripe Mimic Tang (Acanthurus tristis). The juveniles of this species mimic the Red Stripe Angelfish in colour/pattern and behaviour. They should not be housed together in the home aquarium.
Feeding
Offer a varied diet including Spirulina & marine algae as well as meaty fare such as vitamin/Spirulina-enriched brineshrimp, Mysis shrimp, special sponge-based Angelfish preparations, and finely chopped krill/squid/cockle/mussel. Feed small amounts 3 times per day.
Breeding
Unlikely to breed in the home aquarium. It has been reported that in the wild, they form small harems (one male and several females) when spawning.
