At home amongst the corals, Anthias are social and reef safe with very well-defined social structures, most species are found in harems with a single male and multiple females, and this can be duplicated in the aquarium. As is the case with wild groups, small juveniles can be added to existing fish with minimal disruption, but larger individuals will be rejected.

As most of these fishes evolved in an environment where plankton is constantly drifting past, they need frequent feeding to stay in good shape. Dry food will be taken after a little training, especially if fish such as Green chromis are present to lead by example. Deep water forms and some of the less gregarious species are content with less frequent feeds and are therefore easier to keep.
