This African bulb plant grows large and is best cultivated as a centrepiece in spacious aquaria. The attractive indented leaves can reach over 60cm long and 8 cm broad under favourable conditions. The older leaves tend to be of a dark green colour, whilst younger leaves are of a light brown-green hue until they are fully developed. In the wild, A. boivinianus is found in fast flowing waters so it will appreciate good current in the home aquarium. Bright lighting, a loose nutrient rich substrate, and CO2 injection are all recommended for optimum growth. This plant requires a dormancy period when the root does not produce leaves. Once this begins, it can be helpful to reduce the lighting and lower the temperature (only if other livestock permits this!) or else the tuber can be stored in damp (not wet) moss for a few months. Propagation is by splitting the rhizome or from germinating the seeds.
