The beautiful Microsorum pteropus 'Winder' is a finely-branched leaved cultivar of M. pteropus, named after the founder of Tropica Aquarium Plants: Holger Windelr It is a hardy water fern that does well under a wide variety of conditions. Its ease of cultivation makes it a great starter plant for novice aquarists and its wonderful dense leafy appearance and ability to grow on a variety of decor makes it a popular choice even amongst the most seasoned planted tank enthusiasts. M. pteropus 'Winder' has a horizontal rhizome from which the roots and leaves grow, and this rhizome should never be fully submerged in the substrate otherwise the plant will rot. Instead, M. pteropus 'Winder is best attached to driftwood or rocks using dark cotton or fishing line, and after a few months, the roots will have taken hold sufficiently for the ties to be removed. Due to its purportedly bitter taste, this plant is often successfully maintained in aquaria containing fish that are ordinarily quite detrimental to other plants. Easily propagated from the small adventitious plantlets that form on older leaves, or from splitting the rhizome.
