Nymphaea lotus "zenkeri" is a graceful tropical water lily that can be successfully cultivated in large home aquaria. Popularly known as the Tiger Lotus, it is an extremely variable plant with respect to leaf colour and shape, and several colour varieties are available. As it grows underwater, numerous wavy leaves will form prior to it reaching the surface where it will eventually develop flat floating leaves. A nutritious substrate and bright lighting are highly recommended to encourage growth. If it is allowed to grow and develop floating leaves in open topped aquaria, pretty, aromatic flowers will form (these blooms only open overnight). The Tiger Lotus is best grown as a specimen plant and given plenty of room; the floating leaves can create a lot of shade, which could stop light reaching nearby plants. If floating leaves are not desired, the plant can be pruned, and this in turn will promote the growth of more submerged leaves. However, if the floating leaves are removed, the plant will not flower. Propagated from seeds.
