Vallisneria americana var. biwaensis has attractive tightly twisted bright green leaves that create a strong impact in the aquarium. Compared to other Vallisneria species, this plant is slightly more demanding in terms of light requirements but will grow and spread quickly if provided with an intense photoperiod and a nutrient rich substrate. The comparatively shorter leaves mean it does not tend to overshadow other plants in the aquarium quite as much as other Vallisneria species tend to do so. If the leaves turn yellow and the spirals become more widely spaced, the plant is not being given sufficient light. Although it can be cultivated in moderately soft water, Vallisneria grows much more vigorously in harder water, just as it is found doing so in the wild. In aquaria with nutritious substrates, this plant will readily propagate all over the tank floor by sending out numerous runners with daughter plants.
