Aponogeton distachyos is an exotic-looking deepwater perennial with floating habit that will generally flower twice a year. It should be planted in the deepest area of the pond, and in an area that receives full sun. Plant firmly in a medium sized aquatic planting basket filled with aquatic soil, and apply a thin top layer of pea gravel to prevent the top layer of the planting medium from clouding the water. The rhizome of the plant should protrude slightly above the surface of the planting container. The container should be raised on bricks when the plant is young and small, and it can then be gradually lowered as the plant matures to allow the green oval leaves to float on the water's surface. A. distachyos undergoes a period of dormancy in the summer and many aquarists find this plant pairs well with water lilies, which are usually in flower at this time. Once it emerges from dormancy, usually around September time, it will send out lots of foliage and small, long-lasting, fragrant white flowers in forked racemes held just above the surface (it is often in bloom right up until the first frosts). Any decaying foliage can be trimmed during the autumn, and then in the early spring, the plant will flower again for several months (before reaching its dormancy period in the summer). Can be propagated by seed or rhizome division in the spring.
