Arundo donax "variegata" is a tall-growing, perennial ornamental grass that will add an architectural touch to any planting scheme. The broad leaves are attractively striped in green, yellow, and white and create an almost "bamboo-like" effect, which can be used as a bold backdrop. It looks particularly effective growing near large, established ponds. This is a plant that prefers a sunny, sheltered position away from strong winds. It can add a sense of movement to the garden as it sways and rustles with the slightest breeze. Most soil types are tolerated; however, it does favour moist but well-drained conditions. Give this plant plenty of room, as growth can be vigorous and its clump-forming habit means it will spread easily; the rhizomes are fibrous and tough, and form knotty spreading masses that penetrate deep into the soil. Upright, whitish, feathery flowers some 40-60cm (16-24") long may be seen in late summer, but the resultant seeds are rarely fertile.
