Family | Plantaginaceae |
Growth Rate | Fast |
Height | 1.5m (5ft) but grows under the water |
Origin | Northern hemisphere |
Category | Oxygenator |
Callitriche palustris is an excellent oxygenator for the pond. This plant grows submerged with masses of small star-shaped leaves, which spread to reach the surface and form attractive mats. It should be allowed to root into soil at the bottom of the pond, or else planted out in a small/medium container using aquatic soil and a top layer of pea gravel and placed in a deep area of the pond. This plant not only helps to oxygenate the water, but is also a good food source for fish, as well as an important habitat for fry, the leaves holding spawn very well. It will also provide sanctuary for a variety of other aquatic life. During the summer, miniscule white flowers form at the leaf bases. These lack sepals and petals; two small white coloured bracts serve as petals instead. Can be easily propagated from cuttings.
