Nymphoides peltata is a native aquatic perennial that looks just like a miniature water lily. This vigorous grower will soon provide a dense covering, with its bright green, floating, cordate leaves, and during the summer will display a profusion of bright yellow almond-scented flowers with fringed petal margins, that are 3.5cm (1.4") across. N. peltata is a hardy plant that will tolerate moderately flowing water and partial shade; however, it will always fare better and look at its best in bright sunshine. To keep growth under control in smaller ponds, plant up into small or medium sized pond baskets filled with aquatic soil and finished with a layer of pea gravel to stop the planting medium from clouding the water. This is an ideal plant for providing shade and shelter for fish and other aquatic life. Be sure to deadhead and remove yellowing leaves on a regular basis. Although plants may propagated from seed, the easiest method is by dividing off plantlets during late spring. These should be submerged in shallow water until established enough to move to deeper areas.
