Ranunculus hederaceus is a creeping, native annual or short-lived perennial known from the edges of ponds, ditches, streams, and wet, muddy ground close to water. This marginal plant has leaves that are vaguely ivy-shaped, and, quite unusually for a member of the Crowfoot family, it has no thread-like submerged leaves. From late April until August, the plant produces tiny (3-6mm across) flowers with 5 white petals and bright yellow stamens, attractive to pollinators such as bees, hoverflies, and butterflies. The flowers are then followed by rounded fruits. R. hederaceus should be grown in full sun or partial shade, and prefers a rich, loamy substrate on damp muddy ground or placement in shallow, still or sluggish water. This pretty little plant is generally pest-free and requires little in the way of maintenance, aside from deadheading the flowers once they have finished blooming (otherwise you could wait until the subsequent fruits produce seeds and collect these for growing the following spring). Propagation is from seed or cuttings.
