Sagittaria filiformis is an aquatic perennial known from shallow streams, swamps, and slow-flowing rivers. This vigorous grower has simple, submerged, basal leaf blades which are long and slender, typically between 1 and 15mm wide, and up to a whopping 2.5m in length. These narrow, ribbon-like leaf blades are sagittate, meaning they are arrow-shaped with backward facing lobes, hence the common name/s. The floating leaves, however, are very different - ovate in shape and just 0.5cm wide. From July to October, the plant produces racemes of 3-petalled white flowers, which are followed by nutlets. As S. filiformis can attain quite a length, it really is only appropriate for the largest of ponds. This low maintenance oxygenator should be grown in a position that receives full sunlight, in slow-moving water. Plant up into pond baskets to limit the spread, and cut back in late summer, removing the dead flowerheads if you wish to prevent self-seeding. Propagation is by seed or by division of the runners.
