Blennies are a group of relatively small fish that have elongated bodies (some almost appearing to be eel-like in shape) possessing relatively large eyes and mouths, and their dorsal fins are often continuous and long. The blunt heads of Blennies often possess elaborate comical whisker-like structures called cirri. As a general rule Blennies are benthic, spending most of their time on or near the sea bed. Many are reclusive and may burrow in sandy substrates, inhabit crevices in rock work, or even make suitably-sized empty mollusc shells their home! There are six families considered 'true Blennies', all
grouped together under the suborder Blennioidei and there are approximately 833 species in 130 genera within the suborder.
One interesting fact about these characterful and territorial marine fish is when they live in shallow intertidal areas that become isolated rock pools at low tide. Rather than becoming stuck in a limited space, by memorising the specific details of their residence, they are more than capable to propel themselves and 'jump' from one pool of water another to maximise their resources and then safely return 'home' again. Additionally, many members of the Blenny family are also very keen gardeners and are committed to chasing away any herbivorous fish that would otherwise eat all their homegrown produce!
