Our marine specialist stores carry a lot of frags, some of these are produced instore by our staff and it’s become the norm to see rows of brightly coloured tiny corals during store visits. In contrast, seeing a larger specimen such as this Metallic red brain coral (Symphyllia sp.) at our Leicester store is all the more impressive.

After a hot summer, the Japanese koi at our Guildford store are looking fat and happy. These are important weeks for pond fish and it’s all about going into the winter months in good shape – soon it’ll be time to switch to a winter diet.

It’s been a great summer for most of our pondfish, they’ve been thriving and growing rapidly in vats which have been as warm as the tropical systems indoors. These Butterfly koi at our Birmingham store were very active in the warm weather.

School's out for summer and we have some great ideas for fishy fun, in-store and out, to keep the kids occupied during the long summer holidays. Our stores are also teeming with some fantastic pond plants that are starting to show off their stunning flowers - perfect for adding some late summer colour, attracting wildlife and helping to eradicate unwanted algae.

Given the length of time that they’ve been prized as pets, it’s not surprising that Fancy goldfish are available in a range of shapes and colours. Some, such as this Panda oranda seen recently at our Shrewsbury branch, are more rarely seen than others due to the difficulties in breeding fish with stable colouration. Lake Tanganyika is home to a fantastic array of cichlids, most of which are found nowhere else. These fascinating fishes have evolved many different forms, including the high-bodied Altolamprologus which can hunt small prey in tight crevices.
