The recently opened S.E.A. (Singapore Entertainment Aquarium) in Singapore has laid claim to being the biggest aquarium in the world today! The attraction, which opened on 22nd November 2012, contains over 800 species of marine animals, all swimming in a mind-boggling capacity of just under 12 million gallons of water. The animals, which total almost 100,000 in number, are spread across an impressive 10 distinct zones:

• Zone 1 : Strait of Karimata and Java Sea

• Zone 2 : Strait of Malacca & Andaman Sea

• Zone 3 : Bay of Bengal & Laccadive Sea

• Zone 4 : Ocean Journey

• Zone 5 : Open Ocean

• Zone 6 : Arabian Gulf and Arabian Sea

• Zone 7 : Red Sea

• Zone 8 : East Africa

• Zone 9 : South China Sea

• Zone10 : Shark Seas

Within these zones the aquarium boasts some 49 habitats, such as 'Mangrove', 'Shipwreck' and 'Coastal'. And to top it all off, the aforementioned 'Open Ocean' zone also houses the world’s largest single viewing panel of approximately 118 feet (36m) wide by 27 feet (8.3m) tall! Now we bet that takes some algae cleaning too!

Ironically, anyone feeling hungry during their visit can take the opportunity to dine in the Ocean Restaurant, sharing an unobstructed underwater view of the many inhabitants whilst eating sustainably sourced seafood meals.

This huge aquarium is part of 'Resorts World Sentosa', a massive resort complex on the island of Sentosa located just off Singapore’s southern coast. The concept of S.E.A is not only to showcase a multitude of stunning aquatic habitats, but to also educate all visitors (as well as the local community) and promote the various conservation programs in which visitors can participate in.

Before S.E.A opened its doors, the title for the world’s largest aquarium went to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, USA. This aquarium, which contains some 10 million gallons of water, opened in 2005 and houses, amongst a vast array of other marine animals, the only whale sharks outside of Asia. Impressive stuff.
